Prayer – Part 3

Did Jesus’ Prayer “Work”?

How do we know when our prayers are _________________?

Most people think that prayer works when we _____________ what we ask for.

We need to ______________ how we evaluate the effectiveness of our prayers.

Matthew 26:36-46

Gethsemane

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”

43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus received a __________ answer to His prayer yet His prayer still ________________.

Prayer “works” when my __________________ agrees with God regardless of whether His ______________ agree with me.

Jesus prayer didn’t fail because He didn’t get the answer He ______________.  Rather, His prayer worked because He got the attitude He ________________.

Whether or not God plans a _________________, God’s plan is good.

The possibilities are ___________________ but God is always ________________ by being “good”.

Do you want your attitude to _______________ God’s attitude for you?

I have an _________________ burden to be involved in a church that is ________________ with a burden to pray.

Want to give a great ______________ to those you care about?

Isaiah 55:1-3,

Invitation to the Thirsty

55 “Come, all you who are thirsty,
    come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
    come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
    without money and without cost.
Why spend money on what is not bread,
    and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
    and you will delight in the richest of fare.
Give ear and come to me;
    listen, that you may live.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
    my faithful love promised to David.

Isaiah 55:6-7

Seek the Lord while he may be found;
    call on him while he is near.
Let the wicked forsake their ways
    and the unrighteous their thoughts.
Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them,
    and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
