Worship Because of Who We Are

Psalm 95 is a call to worship God. It is a psalm of praise. My focus in on verses 6-7: “Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand.” So often we are tempted, or at least I am tempted, to focus on worship for what is going on in my life or what God has done for me. These verses remind me that true worship doesn’t flow from either of those things, but from my relationship to God. Verse 6 reminds me that God is my Maker. God is worthy of my worship because He has created me. It saddens me that so many who claim to follow Jesus have settled for the idea that God is not the Creator or Maker. The fact that God has created me drives me to worship Him.   I am not a product of chance or evolution. As my Maker I am also accountable to Him which leads me to a greater desire to worship (and sometimes a desire to run away…). Then I am reminded that I am a sheep, belonging to God the shepherd. I worship Him because of my relationship with Him. Being a sheep that is under His care is something that moves me to worship. I am often a wayward sheep but He is still my shepherd. I am very thankful and worshipful for that. The idea that God is my maker and my shepherd leads me to worship, regardless of the circumstances around me. Praise God for that!
