True Love Part 3 “True Love Versus False Love”

True Love Versus False Love

In 1 John, God wants us to understand what __________  __________ is truly about.

A staple of many tests is the ________/__________ question.

One thing we need to get right in life is ___________________ and ___________________ the love of God.

God doesn’t desire that we _________________ His love, but that we _______________ His love.

The message of 1 John is not “How do I love _______ that I can belong to God?”  Rather, the message is “How do I love _______ that I belong to God?”

Question #1:  Do I ___________ God’s commandments?  1 John 2:3-6

Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers

We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God[a] is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

God clearly says that the follower of Jesus will     _____________ God’s commands, not _______________ God’s commands.  Luke 6:46

The Wise and Foolish Builders

46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?

Example:  1 John 2:9-11

Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister[a] is still in the darkness. 10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister[b] lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.

What does it say about ________ if I say that I hate             _______________ else?

Why is it that the followers of Jesus are so well   known for their ____________ when we serve the God of             ____________?

The idea of “loving your brother” doesn’t mean ___________________ the truth, it means being             ___________________ about the truth.

We won’t _____________ a man in his ____________ when        we know the ______________ from his ________________.

Question #2:  Do I love the _____________?   1 John 2:15-17

On Not Loving the World

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

The “world” we are not to love is the ___________  system of this world.

False love here is not characterized by the           _____________ of the love but the _____________ of the love.

Love can be very ________________ and very _____________.
