Superheroes – Part 3

Jeremiah – God’s “Unsuccessful” Hero

In the movies heroes almost always _____________.

Can you or I be a hero without saving the day?  ____________

From a human perspective Jeremiah was a ________________.  From God’s perspective Jeremiah was a _________________.

1.  God knows the _______________ of His heroes.  (Jeremiah 1:4-5)

The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew[a] you,
before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

            a.  Are you letting God ________________ you?  (1:9-10)

Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”

            God prepares mostly through His ____________ and His     ___________________.

            b.  The future of God’s heroes is always ________________   when we follow Him.

            “Some wish to live within the sound of church or            chapel bell; I want to run a rescue shop within a yard             of hell”

            “I will blaze the trail, though my grave may only become a stepping stone that younger men may             follow”

2.   God’s heroes will find themselves in ______________.

            The word “hero” and “crisis” go _________________.

            Heroes in crisis can get _________________.  (8:18-22)

18 You who are my Comforter[a] in sorrow,
my heart is faint within me.
19 Listen to the cry of my people
from a land far away:
“Is the Lord not in Zion?
Is her King no longer there?”

“Why have they aroused my anger with their images,
with their worthless foreign idols?”

20 “The harvest is past,
the summer has ended,
and we are not saved.”

21 Since my people are crushed, I am crushed;
I mourn, and horror grips me.
22 Is there no balm in Gilead?
Is there no physician there?
Why then is there no healing
for the wound of my people?

            Heroes in crisis can get __________________. (12:1-4)

12 You are always righteous, Lord,
when I bring a case before you.
Yet I would speak with you about your justice:
Why does the way of the wicked prosper?
Why do all the faithless live at ease?
You have planted them, and they have taken root;
they grow and bear fruit.
You are always on their lips
but far from their hearts.
Yet you know me, Lord;
you see me and test my thoughts about you.
Drag them off like sheep to be butchered!
Set them apart for the day of slaughter!
How long will the land lie parched
and the grass in every field be withered?
Because those who live in it are wicked,
the animals and birds have perished.
Moreover, the people are saying,
“He will not see what happens to us.”

            Heroes in crisis can find ________________.  (1:8)

Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.

            When we ______________ God we are in the _______________ possible place.

3.  A hero’s __________________ with God is his ultimate success.

            Most of the world’s criteria for success is based on        the “_______________”.

            Jeremiah’s success was based on his ______________ in       the Lord.  Lamentations 3:21-26

21 Yet this I call to mind
and therefore I have hope:

22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.”

25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;
26 it is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.

            Nothing from the ________________ can harm your   relationship with God unless you ______________ it.
