Prayer Part 1 “Why Did Jesus Pray?”

Prayer – Part 1

Why Did Jesus Pray?

Are you somewhat ________________ with the idea of prayer?

For many people, prayer doesn’t really seem to ________________ anything.

This prayer of Jesus comes right before His _______________ and ______________________.

Matthew 26:36-46

Gethsemane

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”

43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus prays because He _____________ the Father to do something.

How much time in a week do you pray for something you really _____________ your heavenly Father to do?

Often prayer is a lighthearted expression of __________________ or an ___________________ of God’s presence in our lives.

Why did Jesus feel the need to pray?

1.  Jesus was ____________  ________________ to the Father.

You won’t feel the need to pray if your relationship            with God is _______________.

If we don’t ______________ God we will most often say             _________ to prayer.

  1. Jesus needed something _____________ the Father could do.

Is there genuine _______________ in your prayers?

               Luke 22:44

And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[a]

  1. Jesus _________________ God could do it, if He wanted to.

What is the connection between our _______________               and God’s _________________?

Matthew 21:22,

22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

Matthew   17:19-21

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” [21] [a]

Is there a ______________  _____________ for answered     prayer?

I don’t know how belief and prayer are       _________________ but I also believe that prayer will be                ineffective if they are ___________________.
