You Don’t Want to Be Described This Way

Have you ever had anyone describe you in a way that was not very flattering to you? “He’s the one with the big nose”…not that I’ve ever had that said about me… In Psalm 14 there is a biblical description of a “fool”. The fool is said to have said in his heart, “there is no God”. That’s a pretty foolish statement. The fool is then described as one who is corrupt and has done abominable works. God doesn’t look too kindly on fools or those who despise His people. I don’t want to be described as a fool but when I walk away from God’s plan…when I do what I want to do instead of what God desires, I certainly act like one. In verses 2-3 David goes on to write this: The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who understand, who seek God.  3  They have all turned aside, They have together become corrupt;  There is none who does good, No, not one. Again, not a very flattering description of mankind is it? Some of you will recognize these words from Romans chapter 3. Paul quotes from Psalm 14 in that chapter.

Though a person might not want to be described the way the fool and the person without God are described in psalm 14, David, under the inspiration of God, is simply telling it like it is. This is an accurate description of man without God. Sure, sometimes we have our good moments but in comparison to the holiness of God, we are definitely “not good”. Through Jesus Christ we can be infused with His righteousness but without Him we are “no good”. I trust God to tell it like it is and you and I do well to accept it. For me, I might not like that “big nose” comment but if the shoe fits… Hopefully I won’t be a fool with a big nose!
