How’s Your Walk?

There are a few things I’d like to comment on in Ephesians 4. In the beginning of the chapter Paul talks about the word “walk”. When you read the word “walk” in the New Testament the word is not typically talking about putting one foot in front of the other. Rather, the word “walk” usually refers to how one lives life. Often you can substitute the word “live” for the word “walk”. Here is how Paul begins this section of his letter: I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. The “calling” Paul refers to is life in Jesus Christ. He is addressing followers of Jesus and exhorting others to live in way that is worthy of that relationship. Please note the words that Paul uses to describe this way of living…lowliness, gentleness, longsuffering, bearing with one another… These are not “fighting words”. These are not words that demand rights and privileges. Rather, these are words that reflect the mindset of Jesus Christ. These are words that are intended to communicate to the world around us that we don’t need to be first. We don’t need to have the spotlight. Rather, we are here to serve. These words are the key to keeping unity. These words are the key to being lights in this world.

Do these words characterize your “walk” through this life? If not, it is time to change your step.
